Former Hurricane Jimmy Gaines Selected as Buffalo Bills Free Agent
MAY 14, 2014, MIAMI, FL - Jimmy Gaines, linebacker out of the University of Miami, is packing up and heading back home to Buffalo, NY; the Buffalo Bills have signed him as a free agent immediately following the 2014 NFL on Saturday, May 10.
As a ‘Cane, Gaines was named the 2013 Strength Training Athlete of the Year and ended his collegiate career with a total of 199 tackles, 112 solo and 8 sacks.
'When I got the call, I was just so excited - it was like a wake-up call if anything, like it's time to really get to work,' said Gaines of his free agent contract. 'Being at home also made it an extra special moment. I grew up watching the Bills and always thought about playing on that field, and now hopefully that can become a reality.'
U of Miami has a rich history of NFL-worthy linebackers, like Ray Lewis (1996 - 1st round), Sean Spence (2012 - 3rd round) and Colin McCarthy (2011 - 4th round).
Gaines' NFL agent, Derek Spearman, also spoke of his client's hard work.
'Jimmy had an excellent pro day which got him lots of interest from NFL teams,' said Spearman. 'There's no doubt in my mind that he will excel in the NFL.'
The Bills will start their 2014 season on Sunday, September 7 against the Bears in Chicago.
